The Evolution CS 5.3 Black Edition is an all-in-one CD receiver from the German maker AVM, combining a CD drive, a network streamer, a DAC, a valve line preamplifier and a stereo power amplifier in a single chassis. The Black Edition is an upgraded version of the standard CS 5.3, priced at about EUR 12,780 and available from August 2026.
Key specs that matter
Its amplifier section is rated at 2 x 180 W into 8 ohm and 2 x 350 W into 4 ohm. THD stays below 0.005%, and the gain factor is 30. The preamplifier section has THD below 0.025%, a signal to noise ratio above 100 dB and unity gain. Frequency response extends from below 5 Hz to above 100 kHz at -3 dB. Input impedance is 50 kOhm on RCA and 40 kOhm on XLR, and output impedance is 47 ohm on RCA and 94 ohm on XLR. The DAC uses the ESS ES9028PRO in a double-quad arrangement with four converter channels per side and accepts PCM up to 32 bit and 384 kHz and DSD256. Inputs are a switchable MM and MC phono input, three RCA line inputs, one XLR line input, coaxial and optical S/PDIF, HDMI ARC and USB-A. The headphone output has an impedance of 24 ohm, a gain of 2 and THD below 0.001%. The unit measures 430 x 122 x 350 mm and weighs 11 kg.
Engineering and use context
The valve line stage is a custom module with a rated valve life of about 20,000 hours, and it sits between the source selection and the power amplifier. For the Black Edition, AVM optimised the valve module, used selected operational amplifiers and Mini-MELF precision resistors, wired the interior with silver, redesigned the output stage and increased the power supply capacity. Running four DAC channels in parallel per side lowers noise compared with a single channel. Network functions cover Ethernet at 100 Mbit, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 and AirPlay 2, with Spotify Connect, Qobuz, TIDAL Connect and Roon Ready. A dimmable white OLED display with touch control sits on the front. The standard finishes are silver or black aluminium, and a Cellini version with a chrome front and polished knobs is also offered. Television sound arrives over HDMI ARC without a separate processor.
Pairing
Its power reserve covers most floorstanding and stand-mount speakers, including low-impedance designs. AVM's own Audition CB 2.3 compact speaker is designed as a partner for its compact electronics. A record deck plugs straight into the phono input, and streaming, CD and television sources are built in or connect directly.
Alternatives
The AVM Evolution CS 3.3 offers the same connections and power with a fully solid-state preamplifier stage.
