The EC Play is a portable CD player from Shanling, the Chinese maker of portable players and DACs, built in a full aluminium alloy body and also usable as a USB DAC and a two-way Bluetooth transceiver. It belongs to Shanling's EC series of portable CD players alongside the EC Zero T MAX and EC Zero AKM, and Shanling describes it as smaller and lighter than any of its predecessors, at 418 g. It sits next to the desktop CD50 in the current Shanling range, and it costs about EUR 193.

Key specs that matter

Shanling fits a Cirrus Logic CS43198 converter, and the headphone section uses two SGM8262 amplifiers. As a USB DAC it accepts PCM up to 32 bit and 384 kHz and DSD256. Bluetooth 6.0 works in both directions, as a receiver and a transmitter, with LDAC, AAC and SBC. Outputs are a 3.5 mm single-ended and a 4.4 mm balanced headphone jack and a coaxial digital output. Output power reaches up to 700 mW into 32 ohm. The 3450 mAh battery provides up to 12 hours of playback. A 28 mm screen and physical buttons operate the player, with selectable interface themes, a lid lock and a button lock. The body is CNC-machined aluminium in black and measures about 142 x 125 x 26 mm.

Engineering and use context

Portable CD players have to cope with movement, and the EC Play clamps the disc magnetically with an anti-vibration design to reduce skipping when walking or travelling. The CS43198 converter feeds two SGM8262 amplifier chips, and the balanced output drives each side of the headphone driver from its own amplifier, which delivers more voltage than the single-ended jack. The coaxial output lets the EC Play serve as a CD transport for a home DAC, sending the disc data out digitally. As a USB DAC it can play files from a computer or phone. The two-way Bluetooth link can receive audio from a phone, turning the player into a wireless headphone amplifier, or transmit the CD signal to wireless headphones and speakers. The lid lock and button lock prevent accidental opening or operation in a bag.

Pairing

Wired headphones and in-ear monitors connect to either headphone output, and the available power covers most portable headphones. At home, the coaxial output connects to a DAC or AV receiver, and Bluetooth headphones pair through the transmitter mode.

Alternatives

The Shanling EC Zero T MAX is the other current portable CD player in the Shanling EC series.
