The B77 MK III Alice Cooper Edition is a special run of the Revox reel-to-reel recorder, made in only 25 units worldwide in collaboration with the American rock singer. Each machine carries a black and red design with his signature, is individually numbered and is hand-signed by Cooper, who took part in the design. The edition was priced at about USD 28,000 including shipping, and a companion T77 turntable edition was limited to 50 pieces.
Key specs that matter
The deck handles 6.3 mm tape in two-track format at two speeds. At 19 cm/s it records and plays with 257 nWb/m and NAB equalisation, while at 38 cm/s it works with 510 or 320 nWb/m and either NAB or CCIR. Three heads - erase, record and playback - are fitted, with a playback gap of only 2 um and a record gap of 7.6 um. Wow and flutter is given as 0.06%. Signals enter and leave through balanced XLR sockets, RCA adapters are supplied, and there is a DC-coupled bipolar headphone jack. The chassis is 452 mm wide, 414 mm high and 207 mm deep, and the standard machine weighs 18 kg.
Engineering and use context
The transport uses three motors in a servo-controlled direct-drive layout - two reel motors and a regulated capstan motor whose concentricity tolerance is one thousandth of a millimetre. Revox states that the improved heads in series production last much longer than the ones fitted to the B77 MK II. Film capacitors are used instead of electrolytics, the tape counter is digital, and VU meters read from -20 to +3 dB with a clipping light. A splicing table on the deck allows tape editing. The original B77 appeared in 1979 and the MK II stayed in production until 1998, and today the MK III is built in Villingen, Germany. Buyers of this edition receive a master tape of the 2018 EP The Sound of A, plus reels finished in the limited Alice Cooper look. Owners were also offered a meet and greet with the singer, with one date during the Munich show in May 2025 and one in the USA at the end of that year.
Pairing
Balanced XLR outputs go directly into any amplifier or preamp offering XLR line inputs, and the included adapters cover RCA-only electronics. The bundled master tape is recorded for this transport, so no extra source is needed to start playback, and the headphone jack allows monitoring during recording.
Alternatives
Revox currently builds no other tape recorder, as the B77 MK III in its standard and special editions is its only reel-to-reel machine.
