The A810 is a professional quarter-inch reel-to-reel tape recorder from the Swiss company Studer, built during the 1980s for broadcast and studio work. It was produced in mono, stereo, two-channel and two-channel time code versions, and each could be ordered as a 19-inch rack chassis, a console on castors, a box-mounted unit or a portable case with handles. Early machines carried a 4-digit LCD tape counter, which Studer later replaced with a 5-digit LED display.

Key specs that matter

The transport takes reels up to 282 mm in diameter with NAB, CINE (EIA) or DIN hubs. LS versions run at 3.75, 7.5 and 15 ips, while HS versions add 30 ips, all chosen with a front-panel rotary switch, and a varispeed function shifts pitch by up to 7 semitones either way. Within plus or minus 2 dB, the response is 40 Hz to 22 kHz at 30 ips, 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 15 ips, 20 Hz to 16 kHz at 7.5 ips and 20 Hz to 10 kHz at 3.75 ips. NAB A-weighted signal-to-noise ratios are 74, 70, 72 and 61 dB at those speeds, and maximum wow and flutter ranges from 0.04 percent at 30 ips to 0.12 percent at 3.75 ips. The portable model is 483 mm wide, 500 mm high and 237 mm deep without reels and weighs 31 kg net, while the console stands 1152 mm tall on castors.

Engineering and use context

Tape transport and head assemblies are mounted on a die-cast aluminium alloy chassis, and the deck operates in any position from horizontal to vertical. A microprocessor runs the machine, the capstan motor uses a quartz-controlled servo with a capacitive tachometer, tape tension is regulated electronically through non-contacting sensors, and the spooling motors are driven by pulse-width modulation. Equalisation switches between NAB and CCIR at 7.5 and 15 ips, and a bias switch covers two tape formulations. The last operating state, including counter reading, locator addresses, speed and equalisation, is kept after power-off. A zero locator and four programmable locator addresses speed up editing, as do an optional tape marker and built-in scissors. Options include SMPTE time code for two-channel models (not usable at 3.75 ips), a test generator at 60 Hz, 125 Hz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz and 16 kHz, and a remote controller with an RS-232 serial interface.

Pairing

Inputs and outputs are balanced and floating, with optional transformers, so the A810 connects most directly to professional preamplifiers and mixing desks. A VU meter panel can be switched internally to PPM readings, and a monitor speaker is built into the transport cover. Mains voltage can be selected from 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz.

Alternatives

The Studer A820 is a higher-tier professional reel-to-reel tape recorder from the same maker.
