The Synthesis SDR-40 is an AV receiver from the JBL Synthesis electronics line, combining 16-channel surround processing with nine built-in amplifier channels. It costs about USD 7,800 in the United States and EUR 7,099 in Europe. The Synthesis line also includes the SDR-38 receiver, the SDP-58, SDP-60, SDP-75 and SDP-80 processors, and the SDA-1700, SDA-2200 and SDA-4600 power amplifiers.

Key specs that matter

The nine Class G amplifier channels deliver 145 W into 8 ohm and 200 W into 4 ohm with two channels driven, and 100 W into 8 ohm and 110 W into 4 ohm with all nine driven. THD is 0.002% at 80% of rated power into 8 ohm at 1 kHz. Supported formats include Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Surround and height virtualisation, DTS:X Pro, DTS-HD Master Audio and the DTS Neural upmixer, as well as IMAX Enhanced, Auro-3D and MPEG-H. There are seven HDMI 2.1a inputs for the main zone and one for Zone 2, and two HDMI outputs with eARC and ARC, all with HDCP 2.3 and video up to 8K at 60 Hz or 4K at 120 Hz. Sixteen RCA preamplifier outputs are fitted, along with two coaxial and two optical digital inputs. Power consumption is 900 W maximum, 93 W at idle and 2 W in standby. The receiver measures 432 mm wide, 466.6 mm deep and 186 mm high and weighs 25.3 kg.

Engineering and use context

Class G amplification switches between supply rails of different voltages, using the lower rail at normal listening levels and the higher rail for peaks, which reduces heat compared with a fixed high-voltage supply. The 16 processing channels exceed the nine internal amplifiers, so a full 9.1.6 layout or similar needs external power amplifiers connected through the preamplifier outputs, such as the SDA models from the same line. Streaming is built in, with AirPlay, Google Cast and Roon Ready, plus Spotify, Tidal and Qobuz Connect, alongside Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 802.11ac. The JBL Synthesis Control app runs on iOS, Android and Windows. High-frame-rate HDMI support makes the receiver suitable for current games consoles, and the second HDMI output allows a projector and a television to be connected at the same time.

Pairing

With its all-channel power reserve, the SDR-40 powers a 7.2.2 or 5.2.4 layout with typical home cinema speakers directly. Larger configurations add an SDA power amplifier for the extra channels.
