The MHT300 is a 7.2-channel home theater receiver from McIntosh, announced on 31 January 2023 and delivered from March 2023 at an MSRP of USD 8,000. It combines surround decoding, video switching and seven channels of amplification in one chassis, and it can run as 7.2 or as 5.2.2 with two height speakers. Adding outboard power amplifiers to its height pre-outs extends it to 7.2.4.

Key specs that matter

McIntosh rates the amplifier at 120 W into 8 ohm and 150 W into 4 ohm per channel with all seven channels driven across the 20 Hz to 20 kHz rated power band. THD is 0.05%, signal-to-noise is 85 dB (95 dB below rated output), dynamic headroom is 4 dB and the damping factor is above 100 at 8 ohm and above 50 at 4 ohm. Response runs 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +0/-0.5 dB. The decoder handles Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the Dolby Surround upmixer and its DTS counterpart spread stereo and older formats across all speakers, and seven 32-bit DACs handle conversion. Video switching uses four HDMI inputs and a single eARC-capable HDMI output, passing 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz with 40 Gbps bandwidth, HDCP 2.3 and Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG. The unit measures 445 x 160 x 472 mm and weighs 12.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

The power stage uses Class D amplifier modules, which keeps the heat output to a rated 1000 BTU/h and lets the receiver fit a 3U rack space with the supplied mounting brackets. Power Guard limits signal overload and Sentry Monitor protects against short circuits. Other audio connections are 2 coaxial and 2 optical digital inputs, a USB Type-A port and 2 subwoofer outputs, and speakers attach through 5-way binding posts. There are no analogue audio inputs, no phono stage and no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, so a turntable or analogue source needs a separate preamplifier or converter in front of it. Ethernet gives access to a web-based setup page, and settings can be stored and restored as a backup. Control options include RS232, an IR sensor connection and two 12 V power control outputs, and the receiver is Control4 certified and Crestron Home compatible. An FM tuner, bass and treble controls and signal sensing for automatic on and off complete the feature list. The front uses the black glass panel, illuminated logo, rotary controls and silver trim.

Pairing

Seven passive speakers can run from the internal amplifiers, with two powered subwoofers on the dedicated outputs. A 4-channel power amplifier is needed for the full 7.2.4 layout.

Alternatives

The McIntosh MHT200 is a home theater receiver with an eight-channel amplifier, six channels for the main room and two for a second zone.
