The Core 16+ is a multichannel surround processor from StormAudio, the French home cinema specialist led by CEO Olivier Thumerel. It is an updated version of the Core 16, adding channels and including the company's advanced software features as standard. It was announced in June 2025 and shown at CEDIA Expo 2025, and in New Zealand it retails at around NZD 27,499.
Key specs that matter
The processor decodes and processes up to 18 discrete channels, two more than the Core 16, enabling layouts such as 9.4.4, 9.4.5 or 11.1.6. It decodes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Auro-3D and IMAX Enhanced. Each channel has up to 20 bands of parametric EQ. Other connections include four RCA analogue inputs, three coaxial and three optical digital inputs and balanced XLR main outputs, and the 3RU chassis weighs 8 kg. Video connections are seven HDMI 2.1 inputs and two HDMI 2.1 outputs with ARC/eARC, rated at 40 Gbps for 4K/120 and 8K/60. It uses the same DSP engine as StormAudio's Elite MK3.
Engineering and use context
The Core 16+ is a processor without power amplification, so it drives external amplifiers for every channel. With 18 channels, installers can run large Atmos layouts, several subwoofers or active crossovers. Features previously sold as an optional licence are now standard through a software upgrade. Expert Bass Routing controls low-frequency energy across up to six bass zones and multiple subwoofers. StormXT is an ambience expander that sends content to speakers that a given format would leave silent, for instance using all speakers of a 13.1.10 Atmos layout when playing Auro-3D, which is natively limited to 7.1.4. The HDMI Dual Zone Matrix distributes video to a second zone. StormAudio's analogue section uses a hybrid analogue and digital volume control intended to preserve dynamic range at all levels. The processor is aimed at installers and serious home cinema owners. Thumerel stressed that the extra features came without a price rise. Bass Control and Active Room Treatment are among the included features.
Pairing
The Core 16+ needs multichannel power amplifiers, such as StormAudio's own amplifiers, and a speaker system of up to 18 channels. A 4K or 8K display connects to its HDMI outputs.
