The Vincent SA-32 is a stereo hybrid preamplifier that places valves and transistors in the same signal path, described by its maker as a multi-purpose and sturdily built design for home systems. Its valve complement consists of four 6N16 tubes, arranged as one pair in the input stage and a second pair in the output stage, while the surrounding circuitry uses transistor stages working in Class A. The model was introduced in 2017 and carried a manufacturer's suggested price of USD 1,699.95 in America, is offered in black or silver, and was later succeeded by the SA-32AE anniversary edition.

Key specs that matter

Rated frequency range extends from 20 Hz to 50 kHz. Input sensitivity is 500 mV against an input impedance of 47 kOhm. Vincent lists a harmonic coefficient of 0.1 percent and an S/N figure of 90 dB. On the input side there are five RCA pairs plus one balanced XLR pair, which gives six analogue sources in total. Outputs comprise three RCA pairs and one XLR pair, supplemented by two 3.5 mm trigger sockets. A 1.0 m XLR cable is packed with the unit. The case measures 430 x 77 x 360 mm and the unit weighs 6.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

Vincent's stated aim was to bring high-end stereo technology to an accessible price by redesigning the functionality rather than substituting cheaper parts, leaving out features it considered non-essential. In line with that, the loudness function of the previous model was removed and replaced by a toggle switch on the front panel that lowers the gain by 8 dB. Adjustable bass and treble controls remain part of the circuit. Relative to its predecessor, the SA-32 also gained balanced terminals placed next to its RCA outputs. By splitting the four valves between input and output, the design places a valve stage at both ends of the signal chain, with the transistor circuitry working between them. A remote control is supplied, housed in an aluminium case.

Pairing

The XLR pair is intended for a power amplifier with balanced connections, and the three RCA output pairs serve unbalanced power amplifier inputs. Vincent positions the preamplifier for use with its own power amplifiers as well as with CD and DVD players and tuners. The trigger sockets can switch a power amplifier equipped with matching trigger connections on and off together with the SA-32.
