The Icon P-80 is a network preamplifier from Onkyo, launched at CES 2025 as the control centre of the Icon Series, alongside the M-80 power amplifier and A-50 integrated amplifier, at USD 1,999. It marks Onkyo's return to high-fidelity separates, and in Europe it sells at about EUR 1,499. The Icon line is developed by Premium Audio Company, which also owns Klipsch.
Key specs that matter
The P-80 is a 2.2-channel network preamplifier. The DAC is an AKM AK4452 handling PCM up to 32-bit/768 kHz. Analogue inputs are three RCA pairs and an MM/MC phono input. Digital inputs are HDMI ARC, coaxial, optical and USB-A for storage playback. Outputs are one RCA and one XLR pair, two independent subwoofer outputs and a 6.3 mm headphone jack. Networking is Wi-Fi and LAN, supporting Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, Amazon Music, TuneIn and Roon Ready. Bluetooth supports SBC, aptX and aptX HD. Power consumption is 35 W, 30 W at idle and below 0.3 W in standby. It measures 435 x 135 x 355 mm and weighs 12 kg.
Engineering and use context
At the core of every Icon component is DIDRC, Onkyo's patented Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry. It is a discrete circuit aimed at the high-frequency noise that digital sources introduce into the analogue path when transients cause rapid level changes, and in the P-80 it is used in the DAC's analogue filter and in the phono amplifier. The phono stage sits on its own board, isolated from the other circuits, and its MC section is discrete to handle the very small output of moving-coil cartridges. The design is fanless, so no mechanical noise is added, and an extruded aluminium heat sink also helps suppress vibration. The housing combines two aluminium side panels with a steel top panel, and an oval chassis with pressed lines stiffens the base and spreads vibration. The two subwoofer outputs allow a pair of subwoofers to be used with the main speakers. A television connects over HDMI ARC, and the Onkyo Controller app manages settings and content from the listening position. A 12 V trigger output starts a connected power amplifier together with the P-80, and a 3.5 mm microphone input is provided for the setup microphone.
Pairing
The P-80 pairs with the Icon M-80 power amplifier through XLR and with the C-30 CD player. A turntable and streaming sources complete the system without further components.
Alternatives
Onkyo's Icon A-50 combines this preamplifier's functions with amplification in a single chassis.
