The FLS1 is a two-channel preamplifier hand assembled at the Civitavecchia works of Audia Flight in Italy for its FLS range. This solid state unit has a fully balanced, dual mono layout, and alongside its line stage it carries a built-in headphone amplifier and slots for optional phono and DAC cards.
Key specs that matter
Connections comprise two balanced XLR inputs and three unbalanced RCA inputs, one XLR and one RCA variable output, plus a fixed-level RCA record output. The volume range spans -90 dB to +10 dB in 0.5 dB steps. Frequency response extends from 0.3 Hz to 500 kHz at -3 dB, rated THD is below 0.05 percent, and noise sits 110 dB under the signal. Input impedance is 47 kOhm and output impedance is below 1 ohm. The headphone section delivers 12 W RMS into 8 ohm, or 10 V RMS. Power draw is 50 W in operation and under 1 W in standby. The case measures 450 x 120 x 380 mm and Audia Flight gives the net weight as 11 kg.
Engineering and use context
The dual mono construction places the left and right circuits on separate printed boards, and the maker quotes a damping factor above 650. The optional modules are plug and play. Power comes from three toroidal transformers enclosed in a metal shield, feeding very low noise supplies. Two gain settings can each be adjusted by 6 dB up or down, and every input can be switched off or renamed, with the choices shown on a blue OLED display. The chassis is brushed aluminium with an engraved logo, and the remote handset is also brushed and anodised aluminium. Mains versions cover 100, 110-115, 220-230 and 240 V at 50-60 Hz. The optional phono card provides 46 dB for MM cartridges and 66 dB for moving coil cartridges, and a separate DAC card adds digital inputs. US pricing was USD 6,995 for the preamplifier, USD 1,000 for the phono card and USD 2,000 for the DAC card, and the warranty ran for three years. Packed for shipping, the unit occupies 600 x 270 x 560 mm and weighs 15 kg.
Pairing
The balanced XLR output feeds a power amplifier with balanced inputs, such as the FLS4 stereo power amplifier from the same Audia Flight range. With the headphone amplifier built in, the FLS1 can also serve a desktop or late night system without a separate headphone unit.
Alternatives
The Audia Flight STRUMENTO n° 1 is the preamplifier of the Strumento series, with a 1 MHz bandwidth, two balanced outputs, a Class A current feedback gain stage and four shielded toroidal transformers.
