The CL-1000 is a Luxman tube preamplifier presented as the successor to the C-1000 of 1975. It combines a tube line stage with transformer-based volume control and an integrated phono section covering MM and MC pickups inside a natural walnut cabinet with a rosewood gloss finish.

Key specs that matter

Line and balanced line inputs have 180 mV sensitivity for 1 V output, with input impedance of 90 kohm unbalanced and 70 kohm balanced. Output impedance is 1 kohm. Line response is +0.3 and -0 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, line distortion is 0.016% at 1 kHz, and line signal to noise is 120 dB IHF-A. The phono stage accepts MM at 100, 50 or 33 kohm with 2.2 mV sensitivity and 108 dB signal to noise, MC-H at 1 kohm and MC-M at 40 ohm with 0.26 mV, and MC-L at 10 ohm with 87 uV. Phono distortion is 0.3%, or 0.5% for MC-L. Power consumption is 52 W, and the unit measures 460 x 166 x 454 mm and weighs 24.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

Luxman calls its level control LECUTA. It is a 34-step rotary switch that fires 34 relays kept outside the signal path. The relays select taps on matched left and right transformers wound on FINEMET cores. Gain comes from six JJ Electronic E88CC dual triodes in a two-stage P-K NF circuit, with a P-G NF tone stage and an NF phono equaliser. Independent super permalloy core output transformers and balanced input transformers serve each channel. Tone controls give plus or minus 8 dB with bass turnover at 150, 300 or 600 Hz and treble at 1.5, 3 or 6 kHz, and a 30 Hz low cut rolls off at 6 dB per octave. Selecting line straight takes the tone stage out of circuit, and an articulator function demagnetises the transformer cores manually. Further controls include balance, mono and phase inversion. The three-layer aluminium front panel is machined against resonance, the feet are density-gradient cast iron, and RCA jacks use a copper and brass alloy.

Pairing

Six-position switches on the rear let the owner set phono impedance and capacitance to suit the cartridge, so the cartridge load is chosen at the preamplifier itself. MC-H and MC-M inputs reach 92 dB signal to noise and MC-L reaches 83 dB, while phono response stays within 0.3 dB across the audio band. Supply versions exist for 230 V at 50 Hz and 115 V at 60 Hz, and a power cable is the only supplied accessory.
