The Emotiva BasX PT2 is a stereo preamplifier in the company's BasX range that also includes an FM tuner, a DAC with several digital inputs and phono amplification for turntables fitted with MM or MC cartridges. It is housed in a heavy steel 2RU chassis behind a solid milled aluminium front panel. Emotiva listed it at USD 699 with a later sale price of USD 579, and it comes with a 3-year warranty. In its shipping carton it weighs 8.2 kg, and with feet fitted the height grows to 102 mm.

Key specs that matter

Four stereo line inputs sit alongside one phono input and a set of Home Theater Bypass inputs. Digital sources connect via one coax S/PDIF input, two optical Toslink inputs and a USB DAC input, all rated for 24-bit/192 kHz, plus a Bluetooth 5 receiver handling AptX, AptX HD and AAC at up to 96 kHz. On the line stage the maximum output is 4 V RMS, frequency response spans 5 Hz to 50 kHz within 0.04 dB, A-weighted THD plus noise stays under 0.001% and noise is more than 120 dB down. Engineering and use context

Bass management is built in. The main line outputs can run full range or bass managed, and a summed subwoofer output uses active 12 dB per octave filters with a crossover point adjustable between 40 and 200 Hz. The Home Theater Bypass inputs cover the front left and right channels plus the subwoofer, so an AV processor can pass its front signals through the PT2 at a fixed level and share the same speakers and amplifier with the stereo system. The phono section follows the RIAA curve from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and is switched between cartridge types. The tuner stores 15 presets and uses an external antenna input. A headphone output supplies 23 mW into 8 ohm rising to 145 mW into 150 ohm, and mains input adapts automatically from 100 to 240 V AC.

Pairing

A stereo power amplifier connects to the main outputs, and an active subwoofer can take the summed output with the adjustable crossover. The bypass inputs make the PT2 a fit for rooms where one set of front speakers serves both music and a surround processor.
