The PAS 30.3 is the streaming preamplifier of the AVM30 line from AVM Audio Video Manufaktur, a company based in Malsch, Germany. It combines an analogue control section with the in-house X-STREAM Engine, a digital converter and a record-player stage serving both MM and MC pickups, all inside a solid aluminium case that is assembled by hand in Germany. AVM positions it as the front end of a separate pre and power amplifier system.

Key specs that matter

The pre-out stage has unity gain, an input impedance of 3.4 kOhm and an output impedance of 470 ohm. Noise sits more than 100 dB down, and the -3 dB bandwidth runs from below 5 Hz to beyond 80 kHz. Crosstalk exceeds 95 dB between channels and 85 dB between inputs, input headroom reaches 3.5 V and the pre-out delivers 3 V at 1% THD. A separate line output has 47 ohm output impedance. The headphone output works with a gain of 4, an 80 ohm source impedance and 4.5 V of headroom. The phono section gives 40 dB for MM and 60 dB for MC, holds RIAA equalisation within 0.2 dB and quotes noise figures above 83 dB(A) and 74 dB(A) respectively. The unit measures 430 x 115 x 320 mm and weighs 6.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

AVM describes the signal paths as completely symmetrical, following a fully balanced circuit design. Network playback handles PCM up to 32 bit and 384 kHz and DSD256 over the network, and plays WAV, MP3, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, DSD, Ogg and AIFF files. Supported services include AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect MAX, Qobuz, HighResAudio, UPnP and web radio, and the preamplifier is Roon Ready, with a multiroom and party sync mode for several AVM devices. Wired inputs cover HDMI ARC at up to 192 kHz and 24 bit, a coaxial input at 192 kHz and 24 bit with 75 ohm impedance and an optical input at 96 kHz and 24 bit, plus analogue line inputs. Digital signals also leave the PAS 30.3 through coaxial and optical sockets. A rear USB 2.0 port reads hard drives and memory sticks formatted as FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS and supplies up to 500 mA. Networking runs over 100 Mbit/s LAN or dual-antenna WLAN on 2.4 and 5 GHz with WPS, and Bluetooth 5.0 LE supports the AVRCP 1.5 and A2DP profiles. Power draw is below 0.5 W in standby, below 2 W in network standby and below 16 W at idle. AVM grants 2 years of warranty, extended by 2 more years with online registration.

Pairing

The low-impedance line output and the phono input let a turntable, a television over HDMI ARC and network sources all run through one box into AVM's own or any other two-channel power stage, or into powered monitors.
