The AD-1PRE+ is a stereo preamplifier from Tonewinner, sold under the Tone Winner name, that combines a line stage, a turntable input section accepting both MM and MC pickups and a built-in digital-to-analog converter in one full-width aluminium chassis. Tonewinner designed it as the matching control unit for its AD-1PA+ stereo power amplifier, and the pair are intended to run together as a separate pre and power system.
Key specs that matter
Digital decoding uses an ESS ES9038 chip behind a CT7601PR USB interface, and over USB it handles PCM up to 32 bit and 768 kHz, DSD over PCM up to DoP256 and native DSD512. The optical inputs accept up to 24 bit and 192 kHz, and an AK4118 receiver chip handles the S/PDIF side. Tonewinner lists playable file types including FLAC, ALAC, AIFF, APE, WAV, DSF and OGG. Digital inputs total five - two coaxial, two optical and one USB-B. Analog inputs comprise four RCA pairs, used for phono MM, phono MC, CD and AUX, plus one balanced XLR pair. On the output side there are two RCA pairs and a single XLR pair. Tonewinner lists the direct analog path at 10 Hz to 180 kHz within plus 1 and minus 3 dB, crosstalk of at least 102 dB and analog input impedance of 20 kohm. Noise sits at least 120 dB below signal, A-weighted. The body is 444 mm wide, 120 mm high and 413 mm deep, and weighs 9.7 kg net or 12.6 kg packed.
Engineering and use context
Level is set by a MUSES72323 electronic volume chip rather than a mechanical potentiometer, and the gain stages use ten operational amplifiers - five OPA1612, four OPA1632 and one OPA1642 - in a Class A/B configuration. Internally the layout is split into several chambers, separating the digital and analog sections. The maker states a rated consumption of 150 W and standby draw of 1 W or less, and the mains input covers 110 V and 220 V supplies. A central display shows the active source, the volume knob is polished aluminium, and the remote handset is also made of aluminium.
Pairing
The intended partner is the AD-1PA+, whose balanced input connects to the XLR output so the signal stays balanced from preamplifier to power amplifier. The second RCA output can feed an active subwoofer or a second amplifier. A turntable with either cartridge type plugs straight into the phono inputs, and a computer, CD transport or television can use the USB, coaxial or optical inputs.
