The Solis is a two-channel reference power amplifier designed and hand-built in England by Rega Research, sold alongside the Mercury preamplifier. Development began around 2022, and the amplifier reached the market in November 2024 at a UK price of GBP 6,950. During development Rega compared a symmetrical prototype with a larger design derived from the Brio-R in blind listening sessions and chose the symmetrical layout.

Key specs that matter

Rated output is 168 W RMS per channel into 8 ohm and 305 W RMS into 4 ohm, measured at 1 kHz and 0.1% THD at the rated mains voltage. THD+N is typically 0.015% at 100 W into 8 ohm over a 22 Hz to 22.4 kHz bandwidth. Frequency response runs from 15 Hz to 30 kHz, both ends at -0.5 dB, at 100 W into 8 ohm. Input sensitivity is 820 mV at 35 kohm on RCA and 1.64 V at 26 kohm on XLR, and gain is 33.3 dB. Consumption is 500 W at one eighth of rated power, equal to 42.5 W into 4 ohm, and 0.4 W in standby. Mains settings of 230, 220, 120 and 100 V nominal are available within 10%. The chassis measures 435 x 140 x 385 mm and weighs 24.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

Rega built the Solis around fully symmetrical discrete circuitry. A differentially driven, common-base voltage amplifier forms the driver stage, and the cascoded differential input stage uses two low-noise, LED-referenced current generators. Each channel has six Sanken 130 W, 15 A multi-emitter output transistors in a triple high-current configuration, twelve in total. Two custom 330 VA toroidal transformers with fully bonded cores, one per channel, feed 40,000 uF of Rega K-Power smoothing capacitance per side through fast-recovery rectifier diodes. The input and driver stages draw from a regulated, symmetrical tracking supply with a low-noise voltage reference. ICEL polypropylene capacitors, HTR non-inductive resistors and relays form the signal path, with Nichicon audio-grade parts for bypass and decoupling. A microcontroller manages slow start, standby and supply supervision, and watches speaker DC and internal temperature, with short-circuit, thermal and DC protection. An audio-detect standby switches off after one hour without signal. Rega gives a lifetime limited warranty.

Pairing

The Mercury Ref preamplifier is the intended partner and links through a 12 V trigger, while the Aethos integrated can also drive the Solis as a preamplifier. The near doubling of output into lower impedance suits low-impedance loudspeakers.

Alternatives

Rega currently offers no power amplifier other than the Solis.
