The Silente Nanofluid is a two-channel power amp conceived and handmade by Andrea Pivetta, an Italian designer and inventor working in Vicenza who presents his audio pieces as collectible sculptures. Pivetta cites more than 40 years of research behind his work, which also includes the Opera Only amplifier project. Each piece is made in Italy and supplied only by private commission, and the maker subtitles the Silente as The Architecture of Silence. Its announced price was EUR 126,000.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 2 x 120 W into 8 ohm and 2 x 240 W into 4 ohm. The maker lists the dimensions as 380 x 450 x 180 mm, and the amplifier weighs 35 kg. Pivetta does not publish input sensitivity, input impedance, frequency response, distortion or signal to noise figures. The rated output is not fixed, because buyers can order the amplifier with a different power level.
Engineering and use context
The central element is a cylinder of Murano glass, made by Venetian glass artisans, in which the whole electronic circuit is fully submerged in a stabilising liquid called Nanofluid. Pivetta keeps the composition of this fluid secret and holds a patent on the approach. According to the designer, the liquid shields the parts from electrical interference and from changes in temperature, which limits thermal drift, and it also damps micro-vibrations in the components. The glass sits inside a heavy waterproof frame machined from aircraft-grade aluminium that adds rigidity and further cuts vibration. The power supply and output stages are assembled without soldered joints. Because each unit is built to order, the circuit itself can be adapted to the electrical specifications of the owner's loudspeakers, which is how the alternative power ratings are produced.
Pairing
The Silente uses proprietary Audiomica connectors rather than standard sockets, so it cannot take ordinary interconnects or speaker leads. For that reason each amplifier ships with a full set of ASEC cables developed by Audiomica Laboratory exclusively for this model - interconnects, speaker cables and a mains cable, all built to the MIL-C-5015 military connector standard - and Pivetta names these as the only cables officially approved for it. Since its output doubles as the load halves, the standard version suits both common nominal loads, while speakers with unusual demands can be matched by ordering a custom power level.
Alternatives
The Pivetta PowerOne is the designer's other stereo power amplifier, a transistor design rated for far higher output than the Silente.
