The RMB-1585MKII is a Rotel multichannel power amplifier with five channels, launched on 5 September 2023 together with the seven-channel RMB-1587MKII. It is designed for home cinema systems that use an AV processor for decoding and need separate amplification for the main channels, and its current US retail price is USD 4,599.
Key specs that matter
With all five channels driven, the amplifier delivers 210 W per channel into 8 ohms and 340 W per channel into 4 ohms, and with two channels driven the 4 ohm figure rises to 440 W per channel. Distortion figures are below 0.03% for both THD and IMD. Frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 100 kHz within +0.1 and -0.3 dB, the damping factor is 223 at 1 kHz into 8 ohms, and S/N measures 120 dB. Gain is 26.9 dB. Input sensitivity and impedance are 1.89 V at 12 kohms on RCA and 4.7 V at 50 kohms on XLR, and crosstalk is better than 55 dB. Power consumption reaches 1,200 W. The chassis measures 431 x 237 x 456 mm, occupies 5U of rack space and weighs 37.4 kg.
Engineering and use context
Rotel uses Class AB output stages, drawing on two toroidal transformers made by Rotel, with eight storage capacitors totalling 120,000 microfarads. Four fans with variable speed, controlled by thermostats, keep the heatsinks within temperature under heavy home cinema use. Each channel selects between its XLR and RCA inputs automatically. A bi-amp switch feeds channels 1 and 2, and 4 and 5, with the same input signal, which lets two pairs of channels drive the bass and treble sections of bi-wirable loudspeakers from one processor output each. A 12 V trigger input and output let the processor switch the amplifier on and pass the command to another unit. Rack ears are included in some regions, and black and silver finishes match other Rotel components. Given its weight and height, the amplifier needs a sturdy rack shelf with space around it for the fans to draw air.
Pairing
Any AV processor or receiver with pre-outs connects over XLR or RCA, and the RCA input sensitivity suits typical processor outputs. The high output into low impedances suits low-impedance front speakers, and the bi-amp mode allows a stereo pair of bi-wirable floorstanders to use four channels, leaving one channel for a centre speaker.
Alternatives
The Rotel RMB-1587MKII is the seven-channel version, rated at 155 W into 8 ohms and 250 W into 4 ohms per channel with all channels driven.
