The Icon M-80 is a stereo power amplifier from Onkyo's Icon Series. It was introduced at CES 2025 with the P-80 network preamplifier and A-50 integrated amplifier It is a Class AB design with analogue VU meters behind a glass front, priced at USD 1,999.
Key specs that matter
Output is 130 W per channel into 8 ohms from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.08% THD, and 200 W into 4 ohms at 1 kHz and 0.7% THD, both channels driven. Inputs include balanced XLR and RCA. The power supply uses custom 10,000 uF capacitors made for Onkyo, and the unit has copper busbars and high-grade speaker terminals. The power cord is removable. Frequency response is 5 Hz to 100 kHz (+1/-3 dB), and speaker impedance may be 4 to 16 ohms. Power consumption is 445 W in use, 51 W at idle and below 0.3 W in standby. The unit measures 435 x 135 x 345 mm and weighs 13.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
Onkyo uses a three-stage inverted Darlington design, which gives a very low output impedance and delivers high current to the speakers. The output transistors are connected in parallel to increase the instantaneous current available. The amplifier uses low negative feedback, which Onkyo states keeps it from being affected by noise returning from the speaker. The driver stage uses DIDRC, Dynamic Intermodulation Distortion Reduction Circuitry, with a high slew rate, to reduce noise in the ultra-high frequency band. A dedicated high-current power supply feeds the amplifier, and the heat sink is extruded aluminium designed to suppress vibration. The chassis consists of two aluminium side panels and a steel top plate, a three-piece construction that increases rigidity and resistance to vibration. The front panel is also designed against vibration. The analogue VU meters show output level for each channel. Onkyo suggests that the M-80 with the P-80 can drive large speakers such as Klipsch Forte. The Icon Series marks Onkyo's return to separate hi-fi components, and the M-80 is its first power amplifier in the range. The amplifier's meters are lit behind glass, echoing the look of Onkyo's classic components.
Pairing
The M-80 pairs with the Icon P-80 network preamplifier through XLR, a balanced link that suits longer cable runs. Its high current output drives most floorstanders in rooms of 20 to 35 m2.
Alternatives
Onkyo's Icon A-50 is the integrated amplifier of the series, combining preamplifier and amplifier in one chassis.
