The HEOS Amp HS2 is a small two-channel Denon power amplifier with the HEOS network platform built in, designed to turn a pair of passive loudspeakers into a zone of a whole-home streaming system. The HS2 generation added Bluetooth and support for high-resolution files to the original HEOS Amp, and its US list price was USD 499.

Key specs that matter

Denon rates the output at 100 W per channel into 6 ohm at 1 kHz with 0.7 percent distortion, and at 70 W per channel into 8 ohm across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.05 percent. The speaker terminals accept loads from 4 to 16 ohm. Through the analogue input, measured THD+N is 0.5 percent at 1 kHz, the signal to noise ratio is 86 dB IHF-A weighted at 10 W into 6 ohm, and frequency response runs from 10 Hz to 40 kHz within +1 and -3 dB. Input sensitivity is 150 mV into 47 kohm. The case stands about 94 mm tall, 222 mm wide and 214 mm deep, and the weight is 2.8 kg, finished in gunmetal silver with black sides.

Engineering and use context

Amplification is Class D, which limits heat and consumption inside such a small case - consumption is 60 W in operation, 3.5 to 4.2 W in quick start mode and 0.3 W in deep standby. The network section uses dual-band Wi-Fi to IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, plus a wired RJ-45 port. Supported files include WAV, FLAC and ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz and DSD at 2.8 MHz and 5.6 MHz, alongside MP3, AAC and WMA. The HEOS app reaches Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn, Napster, SiriusXM, Amazon Music, Tidal, iHeartRadio, Deezer and SoundCloud among its services. Denon states that playback across several HEOS rooms is synchronised to within microseconds, so one track can run in every zone or each room can play something different. Operating temperature is specified as 5 to 35 degrees Celsius, and the controller app runs on iOS and Android phones.

Pairing

Wired inputs are a stereo RCA line input, a 3.5 mm auxiliary jack, an optical digital input and a USB port that plays music files and charges devices. A subwoofer pre-out can feed an active sub to extend bass below small bookshelf or architectural loudspeakers. The wide impedance range covers most passive speakers, including outdoor and in-ceiling models, and a TV can feed the optical input for simple stereo playback.
