The H30A is the reference power amplifier from Hegel Music Systems, nicknamed The Orchestra by its maker. It can be run either as a stereo amplifier or as a mono amplifier, and Hegel describes it as capable of driving virtually all known loudspeakers. In the current power amplifier catalogue it sits above the H20.
Key specs that matter
In mono mode Hegel specifies more than 1100 W into 8 ohm at 1 kHz and 1 percent THD, with that rating stated for 100, 120 and 230 V supplies, and Hegel lists 1 ohm as the minimum load impedance. Distortion stays below 0.003 percent at 100 W into 8 ohm, and intermodulation measured with 19 kHz and 20 kHz tones is below 0.01 percent. Noise sits more than 100 dB below the signal, crosstalk is below -100 dB, and in mono Hegel gives a damping factor above 500. Input impedance is 20 kohm balanced and 10 kohm unbalanced. The case measures 24 cm high, 43 cm wide and 57.5 cm deep, weighs 47.4 kg, and draws 120 W at idle.
Engineering and use context
A dual mono power supply is rated at 2000 VA in total, built from two separate 1000 VA toroidal transformers and backed by 270,000 uF of capacitance. The output stage uses 56 high-speed bipolar transistors, each rated at 15 A and 200 W and chosen for very low distortion. Ahead of it, a hand-matched FET input stage is intended to suppress higher-order harmonic distortion. SoundEngine2, Hegel's feed-forward error correction, works on the signal in real time to cancel distortion, and the DualAmp and DualPower concepts separate the voltage gain and current delivery sections along with their supplies. Connections include RCA and XLR inputs, one pair of heavy-duty gold-plated speaker binding posts and a 12 V trigger input for remote switch-on.
Pairing
A preamplifier with balanced XLR outputs matches the higher balanced input impedance, and a trigger output on the preamplifier can wake the H30A automatically. Two units bridged as mono amplifiers suit loudspeakers with very low impedance. The depth and weight call for a sturdy, deep rack shelf with space for ventilation. The finish is black, and the balanced and unbalanced inputs mean the H30A can also follow a preamplifier that offers only RCA outputs. Hegel positions it for venues of various sizes as well as for home systems.
Alternatives
The Hegel H20 is the other power amplifier in the current Hegel catalogue and uses the latest version of the company's FET technology.
