The A35.8 is an eight-channel power amplifier from Primare, built for multichannel home cinema systems as well as for high-end stereo setups that need several amplified channels. Every pair of channels can be bridged into a single mono channel, so the same chassis can run eight speakers, four bridged channels or a mix of the two, and Primare quotes a maximum total output of 1,500 W.

Key specs that matter

Per channel the A35.8 is rated at 150 W into 8 ohm, 300 W into 4 ohm and 400 W into 2 ohm at 1 kHz. A bridged pair delivers 740 W into 8 ohm, 750 W into 4 ohm and 450 W into 2 ohm. THD+N is 0.005 % measured from 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 10 W into 8 ohm with an AES17 low-pass filter, noise sits more than 115 dB below the signal and frequency response runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +0.2 and -0.5 dB. Each of the eight channels has both a balanced XLR and a single-ended RCA input. The case is 430 mm wide, 400 mm deep and 145 mm high, it weighs 15 kg and it comes in black or titanium.

Engineering and use context

Amplification is handled by eight Hypex Ncore NC500 class D modules, one per channel, which Primare combines with its own power supply, input stage and heatsink work. The power supply uses active power factor correction (APFC), and soft clipping circuitry limits how harshly the output behaves when a channel is pushed to its limit. An auto-sense function wakes the amplifier from standby when a signal arrives, and after 20 minutes without input it drops back to standby, a behaviour that can be switched off. Eight internal LEDs report the state of each channel, with further warning LEDs visible from outside. Two 12V trigger connections on 3.5 mm jacks, each with an input and an output, plus an RS232 port let the amplifier power up with a processor or be run by a control system.

Pairing

A surround processor or AV preamplifier with balanced or single-ended outputs can drive all eight channels, with bridged pairs reserved for main speakers that need more power. Because output keeps rising into lower loads, loudspeakers with low impedance dips are within the amplifier's rated range. In a two-channel system fed by a stereo preamplifier such as the Primare PRE35, the channels can be bridged so that each speaker receives the higher bridged ratings.
