The XPA-1 Gen3 is a mono power amplifier from Emotiva, the American direct-to-consumer electronics company. It is built on the modular XPA Gen3 platform, which uses the same chassis and power supply for amplifiers from one to seven channels, and in this version holds a single high-power channel module. A pair is intended for the main speakers of a stereo system, or for the front left and right channels of a home cinema driven by an AV receiver or processor.
Key specs that matter
The XPA-1 Gen3 delivers 300W RMS into 8 ohms and 600W into 4 ohms. Frequency response extends from 5Hz to 80kHz, signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 117dB and distortion is below 0.005%. The damping factor exceeds 500. Gain is 29dB, with input sensitivity of 1.71V for full output. Input impedance is 33 kilohms balanced and 23.5 kilohms unbalanced, through XLR and RCA inputs. The chassis measures 432 x 203 x 483mm and weighs 15.2kg. The warranty runs five years.
Engineering and use context
Instead of a large linear transformer, the Gen3 platform uses a high-efficiency switch mode power supply (SMPS), which keeps weight down relative to the output power and reduces the heat produced by the supply itself. The amplifier module is fully discrete, with a dual differential input stage, high-current output devices and a short signal path, operating in Class A/B. Emotiva pairs it with what it calls an Optimized Class H power supply topology, in which the supply voltage feeding the output stage steps up only when the music demands it, so the output devices dissipate less power at normal listening levels while full voltage remains available for peaks. The high damping factor comes from the amplifier's very low output impedance, which gives firm electrical control over woofer movement. Microprocessor-controlled protection monitors the amplifier for faults. Because the chassis is modular, six further module slots remain empty in the XPA-1, and the same platform scales up to multichannel models with shared construction.
Pairing
A pair of XPA-1 Gen3 amplifiers drives large, low-sensitivity floorstanders that tax integrated amplifiers and AV receivers. Balanced XLR inputs connect cleanly to a stereo preamplifier or the pre-outs of an AV processor, with RCA inputs for unbalanced sources. Adding a pair to an existing AV receiver's front pre-outs takes the most demanding load off the receiver's own amplifier.
Alternatives
Emotiva's own XPA-2 Gen3 uses the same platform with two channels on one chassis, suiting systems where a single stereo box is preferred.
