Tyr is the monoblock power amplifier that Schiit Audio co-founder Jason Stoddard designed as a high-power monoblock. Design and manufacture take place in the USA, with chassis and transformers from California, circuit boards from Corpus Christi and assembly in San Antonio. Each unit costs USD 1,699, so a stereo pair needs two, and the warranty runs for 5 years on parts and labour. The current version is sold as Tyr F.

Key specs that matter

Rated power is 200 W RMS into 8 ohm and 350 W RMS into 4 ohm. Response is flat within 0.1 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and reaches 3 Hz to 500 kHz at -3 dB. THD and CCIR IMD are both below 0.01% at 200 W into 8 ohm, the A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 120 dB relative to full output, and damping factor is above 200 into 8 ohm across the audio band. Gain is 22 times, or 28 dB, and input sensitivity is 40 Vrms. The case is 406 mm wide, 330 mm deep and 98 mm high, and each unit weighs 25 kg. Peak power draw is 750 W, and standby draw is about 5 to 6 W.

Engineering and use context

Tyr is fully differential, using a discrete current-feedback gain stage named Nexus and a constant-transconductance output stage named Continuity. Continuity uses complementary devices on both rails to prevent the transconductance droop that occurs when a stage moves from Class A to Class AB, and the output stage idles with 5 W of Class A bias. Twenty-four Toshiba bipolar output devices, each rated 15 A and 150 W, handle the current, and the signal path has no coupling capacitors or DC servos. The power supply revives a choke-input design, with a 600 VA transformer feeding the main rails through a custom 5.4 kg inductor of similar size, a 160,000 uF capacitor bank, and seven internal rails with discrete CFP regulators. A microprocessor watches DC offset, temperature and overcurrent, and every unit gets a 3-day burn-in before shipping.

Pairing

Because the circuit is differential throughout, the XLR balanced and RCA single-ended inputs are both accepted without conversion, each with 47 kohm impedance and selected by a rear switch. A single pair of binding posts drives the loudspeaker. An optional Forkbeard module, a USD 50 upgrade, adds remote monitoring of output power, remote standby, feedback switching and input selection. Schiit preamplifiers such as Freya+ or Saga 2 offer balanced or single-ended outputs to feed a pair. Finish is black or silver, with 115 V or 230 V versions.

Alternatives

Schiit Audio has no other monoblock power amplifier, as its other power amplifiers are stereo designs.
