The M500 is a monoblock made by MSB Technology, sold in pairs at an MSRP of USD 118,500. It uses a fully balanced, discrete circuit with a Class A matched impedance input stage and no negative feedback, and each unit is built around a machined aluminium heatsink. Matte silver and matte black anodised finishes are offered.
Key specs that matter
Continuous output is 500 W into 8 ohm and 1000 W into 4 ohm, each at under 1 percent distortion. MSB quotes a dynamic range of 134 dB (137 dBA), frequency response within plus or minus 0.025 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with signal to noise figures of more than 136 dB (above 140 dBA) from 20 Hz to 22 kHz. Equivalent input noise is 0.5 microvolt and output impedance is 0.07 ohm across the audio band. The single XLR input offers user-selectable impedances of 75, 300 or 1200 ohm, and gain can be set to 16.4, 22.4 or 28.4 dB. Static consumption is 150 W and standby draw stays below 2 W. Each block is 381 mm wide, 610 mm deep and 305 mm high, with a weight of 74 kg. Mains operation is auto-switching between 120 and 240 V, with a separate fixed 100 V variant, protected by a 15 A slow-blow fuse. Outputs are two sets of binding posts, and the controls include a gain switch, impedance selector, standby and display dimmer.
Engineering and use context
The power supply stores 1 farad, or 1,000,000 microfarad, of capacitance in what MSB calls its Power Core, supplied by toroidal transformers that MSB designs for low noise and high current. High-current output buffers drive the speaker terminals. The billet heatsink takes about eight hours of CNC machining, reducing a 23 kg block to 7.9 kg, and provides more than 6.4 m2 of surface per amplifier. A modular core enclosure houses the circuitry. Matching the input impedance to the source is meant to minimise signal reflections and input noise while maximising power transfer. Power enters through a 20 A IEC socket, several ground posts help reduce EMI, and the amplifier accepts 12 V trigger commands for power and standby as well as push buttons and remote commands. Viton feet designed by MSB use M6 threads.
Pairing
A preamplifier or DAC with balanced XLR outputs is required, and the selectable input impedance allows the load to match the source. The three gain settings help align the amplifier with speakers of different efficiency, while the 20 A inlet suggests a dedicated high-current mains circuit for each unit. Speaker lugs are recommended for cable termination.
