The Telos 9800 is a mono power amplifier from Goldmund of Switzerland, which calls it the culmination of decades of its research and engineering. It is the first Goldmund amplifier in which the power supply and the amplification stage live in two separate, interconnected enclosures. The announced price is CHF 400,000 per unit, and each channel of a stereo system needs its own monoblock.

Engineering and use context

The circuit follows Goldmund's proprietary symmetrical architecture with a fully symmetrical power stage built on next-generation MOSFET output devices, and the signal path is analogue from input to output. The supply uses custom high-performance transformers, a high-capacity capacitor bank under what the maker calls a controlled energy management system, and a newly developed SoftStart circuit. Cooling relies on natural convection through a 40 mm thick radiator chassis, with no fans. The enclosures are machined from micro-blasted aluminium with 15 mm thick panels, which also provide electromagnetic shielding, and gold-plated copper terminals and screws are used. Protection covers thermal, overcurrent and short-circuit faults. The unit runs on 115 V or 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz, and grey or black finishes are offered, with a redesigned digital display on the front.

Pairing

Inputs are balanced XLR and RCA analogue plus an S/PDIF digital input with a matching digital output, so a digital source can feed the amplifier directly. The analogue input clips at 2 V rms. Speakers connect through Goldmund 4B sockets or binding posts, and the amplifier is stable into loads down to 1 ohm. RS232, a trigger connection and Goldmund mechanical grounding allow integration with the rest of a Goldmund system.
