The MONO VI is the mono power amplifier that Accustic Arts describes as its statement in this category, assembled by hand at the company's German works. Each chassis handles a single channel and shares the 328 x 530 x 545 mm footprint of the stereo AMP VI. US prices have been USD 104,990 with chrome fittings and USD 107,990 with gold, and the case is offered in silver or black anodised aluminium, with gold as a further option.
Key specs that matter
At 1 percent THD+N the amplifier is rated above 950 W into 8 ohm, above 1,500 W into 4 ohm and above 1,600 W into 2 ohm. Voltage gain stands at 30.0 dB. Input resistance is 2 x 16 kohm on the balanced XLR socket and 15 kohm on the unbalanced RCA one. Signal-to-noise ratio is 96 dBA referred to 6.325 V, and distortion at 10 W into 4 ohm and 1 kHz is 0.002 percent THD+N. Idle consumption is roughly 125 W. The weight is about 74 kg, and the transport flight case adds 22 kg on top.
Engineering and use context
Twenty selected MOS-FET devices form the output stage, while the stereo AMP VI uses 40 of them to serve two channels. The supply is based on magnetically shielded, encapsulated toroidal transformers and a filter bank of about 110,000 uF built from German-made capacitors. Contact surfaces of parts in the signal path are gold-plated to reduce contact resistance. Accustic Arts fits its switchable damping factor linearization, so the user can decide whether it is active. Protection covers clipping, HF oscillation, overtemperature and excess DC offset, and a switch-on current limiter keeps the inrush of such a large supply from tripping mains breakers. The housing is heavy aluminium designed to resist vibration, fronted by a thick brass inlay that is polished and chromed. A later MONO VI ULTRA version followed, which the maker introduced after customers asked for more output.
Pairing
With a very low minimum load and four-figure power into lower impedances, a pair of MONO VI can drive low-sensitivity loudspeakers and designs with difficult impedance curves. The amplifier accepts either balanced or single-ended signals, chosen by a switch, and its speaker binding posts are gold-plated and doubled so that bi-wire or bi-amp cabling fits. Given the weight of each unit, each unit needs a floor position or a strong low platform.
Alternatives
The Accustic Arts MONO IV is a lighter single-channel model from the same maker at about 510 W into 8 ohm in a 42 kg chassis.
