The Michi M8 is a monoblock power amplifier sold by Rotel under its Michi name, a line that also covers the S5 stereo power amplifier, the P5 preamplifier and the X-series integrated amplifiers. Each chassis drives one loudspeaker, so a stereo system needs a pair. The design follows a Class AB topology with a fully balanced circuit, and every unit carries a high-resolution front display, network control and two sets of speaker terminals.

Key specs that matter

Continuous output is 1,080 W into 8 ohm and 1,800 W into 4 ohm. Total harmonic distortion is under 0.018% and intermodulation distortion under 0.03%. Response runs from 20 Hz to 20 kHz within +0 and -0.15 dB, and from 10 Hz to 100 kHz within -0.5 dB. Signal-to-noise ratio is 120 dB, IHF A-weighted, and the damping factor is 200. Voltage gain is 30 dB through the XLR input and 34 dB through RCA, with sensitivities of 3 V and 1.85 V and input impedances of 100 kohm and 12.5 kohm. Each amplifier is 485 mm wide, 238 mm high and 465 mm deep and weighs 59.1 kg. Power draw is rated at 1,200 W, while standby falls to under 0.5 W, or under 2 W with network wake-up enabled.

Engineering and use context

The circuit draws on a pair of low-noise toroidal transformers of custom design that Rotel manufactures in-house. Energy storage comes from four British-patented slit-foil capacitors with low ESR, totalling 188,000 uF. The output stage uses an array of 32 high-current transistors, spreading the load so that no single device works close to its limits when the amplifier faces low impedance. The display can show a peak power meter or a spectrum analyser, and a remote control is supplied. For custom installation the rear panel offers RS-232 and Ethernet connections, which allow the amplifier to be switched and monitored by a control system along with the rest of a Michi setup. The two sets of Michi binding posts make bi-wiring possible from a single chassis.

Pairing

With its large power reserve into low impedance and its high damping factor, the M8 suits large, low-sensitivity floorstanding speakers whose impedance dips well below nominal. The high input impedance of the balanced input makes a preamplifier with XLR outputs, such as the Michi P5, the natural partner, and the RCA input covers sources or preamplifiers without balanced outputs at 4 dB higher gain.

Alternatives

Rotel has no other mono power amplifier in its current catalogue alongside the Michi M8.
