The M-880 is a mono power amplifier from Aavik, part of Audio Group Denmark in Aalborg, designed by Flemming Erik Rasmussen and developed from the P-880 stereo power amplifier. It forms part of the 880 series together with the C-880 control amplifier, and each unit is assembled and tested by hand in Aalborg.

Key specs that matter

Output is 400 W into 8 ohm, 800 W into 4 ohm and about 1300 W into 2 ohm, and the damping factor exceeds 1000 into 8 ohm. THD is below 0.007% at 10 W, 1 kHz and 8 ohm. The output stage uses eight transistor pairs, each with its own local capacitor reservoir. Power comes from four PFC resonant-mode switching supplies, each rated at 500 W and 20 A, and a local power bank of 266 mF stores up to 1050 J and delivers peak currents up to 130 A. Standby consumption is below 0.5 W and idle consumption 150 W, a figure that reflects the Class A operation of the output stage even without signal. The chassis is tall and narrow, so a pair can stand beside the loudspeakers and keep speaker cables short. The amplifier is 794 mm high, 342 mm wide and 510 mm deep and weighs 70 kg.

Engineering and use context

Aavik calls the output stage a re-engineered pure Class A design in which the bias is held 0.63 V above the current required at each point of the signal cycle. This keeps the transistors in Class A while reducing the heat that a conventional fixed-bias Class A stage would produce. Giving each of the eight transistor pairs its own capacitor reservoir places energy directly beside the devices that need it during peaks, and the 1050 J power bank supports the output into low impedances. Noise suppression uses Audio Group Denmark technologies, with 112 active gold Tesla coils, 112 active square Tesla coils, eight dither circuits of the third-generation Analog Dither Technology and 14 gold anti-aerial resonance coils from Ansuz. The base combines a wood-based laminate between stainless steel plates with a copper upper layer, and a full copper internal chamber shields the circuits against electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference. Four Ansuz Darkz Z3W feet with zirconium discs and ball bearings are supplied to control resonance.
