The M 200 is a single-channel amplifier built by the German company T+A and belongs to the compact Series 200. It takes the circuit of the A 200 stereo amplifier and devotes the whole output section to a single loudspeaker, so two units are needed for stereo. T+A pairs its own HV voltage amplifier topology and its high-frequency sine-wave mains supply with Class D output stages based on the PURIFI Eigentakt platform from Denmark.
Key specs that matter
Nominal output is 210 W into 8 ohm and 420 W into 4 ohm, the full doubling as the load halves. The response runs from 1 Hz to 60 kHz within +0/-3 dB, noise sits 113 dB below full output, and both harmonic and intermodulation distortion stay below 0.002 percent. The damping factor is quoted at more than 800. Gain is x37, or 31.4 dB. Each unit accepts an RCA input with a nominal sensitivity of 1.13 V at 5.8 kOhm and a balanced XLR input at 2.26 V and 20 kOhm. The case measures 10 x 32 x 34 cm and weighs 5 kg, in anodised aluminium with a silver or black finish. It runs from 220-240 V mains at 50-60 Hz, draws up to 500 W, idles at 25 W and needs less than 0.5 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
The HV stage works at a raised supply voltage, which T+A says gives high linearity along the signal path and removes the need for heavy global negative feedback. The switching mains section runs at more than twice the frequency of a conventional supply, pushing induced interference out of the audio band, and its reservoir capacitors are topped up as often as 100,000 times per second, which T+A puts at about 2,000 times the rate of conventional designs. That lets the rails recover quickly after a peak. A protection scheme called ISC (Intelligent Safe Control) uses several sensors to track temperature, load and clipping, and steps in gradually when a value leaves its safe range instead of simply cutting the output. Large heatsinks form the side profile of the case and keep the output stage cool under sustained load.
Pairing
A matching preamplifier with balanced outputs suits the XLR input best, and the modest input sensitivity means a line-level source with a volume control can also drive the pair directly. The full doubling into low loads makes low-impedance floorstanders a reasonable load, and the very high damping figure gives firm grip on large woofers.
Alternatives
The T+A M 40 HV is a much larger mono amplifier from the HV Series, rated at 550 W into 8 ohm and weighing 52 kg, with 6SN7 valves in its input stage.
