The Klimax Solo 500 is a compact mono power amplifier from Linn, introduced in May 2025 as part of the Klimax family. Linn classifies it as a transistor design working in class A/B, with variable voltage rail control that the company labels Class-V.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 250 W into 8 ohm and 500 W into 4 ohm. Linn states THD+N of 0.0004 percent at 1 kHz and 250 W into 8 ohm, and 0.0005 percent at 1 kHz and 500 W into 4 ohm. Output impedance is 0.01 ohm at 1 kHz. There is one RCA input with 28.6 dB of gain and one balanced XLR input with 22.6 dB of gain, each paired with a hard-wired passthrough socket for daisy-chaining further amplifiers. A single pair of 4 mm binding posts feeds the speaker. The case is 88.5 mm high, 350 mm wide and 364 mm deep, and the amplifier weighs 10.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
Adaptive Bias Control measures the current through the output transistors, digitises it and sets the bias voltage through a DAC and a floating analogue bias circuit in a closed loop, adjusting it continuously so that crossover distortion is cancelled at any temperature and level. The Utopik switch-mode supply is rated at 2 kW and applies a soft-switching method in which a resonant tank circuit brings the voltage across the switch to zero before it changes state, to cut switching noise and raise efficiency. The same supply varies the rail voltage for Class-V operation, letting the amplifier dissipate less power and run cooler at low and moderate levels. Cooling relies on a hybrid matrix. Machined internal fins pass heat upward through gills in the top casework, and under heavy load two internal fans start, their speed set in real time by an FPGA from the internal temperature and the incoming signal. Power draw is 7 W in deep standby, 21 W in shallow standby and 45 W at idle. A mains input accepting 100 to 120 V or 200 to 240 V is auto-ranging.
Pairing
The amplifier accepts a source or preamplifier through either input and can be switched between them on the rear panel. After 20 minutes without audio it drops into a low-power state and wakes on signal, or a 12 V trigger can control this, returning it to play within one second. Linn notes it protects only itself from overload, so volume should be limited with speakers lacking their own protection. XLR or RCA links can be used for bi-amp and tri-amp systems.
