The SU-G700M2 is an integrated stereo amplifier belonging to the Technics Grand Class G700 series, announced on 7 September 2021 as the successor to the SU-G700 and available from October 2021. Technics, the audio brand of Panasonic, offers it in hairline-brushed aluminium, silver or black, and its United States price is USD 3,499.99.
Key specs that matter
Output is 70 W per channel into 8 ohm and 140 W per channel into 4 ohm at 1 kHz and 0.5 percent THD, and the FTC rating is 70 W per channel across 20 Hz to 20 kHz into 8 ohm. Speaker load impedance runs from 4 to 16 ohm. Analogue inputs are two line inputs on RCA plus one phono input with a ground terminal, and its phono section handles moving-magnet types at 2.5 mV and 47 kohm and moving-coil types at 300 microvolts and 100 ohm. Digital connections number two optical, two coaxial and one USB-B input. Outputs comprise a line out, a pre out and a 6.3 mm headphone jack driven by a Class AA amplifier. Line and digital response extends from 5 Hz to 80 kHz at -3 dB. The chassis is 430 mm wide, 148 mm high and 428 mm deep, and power consumption is 95 W.
Engineering and use context
Technics built the SU-G700M2 as a fully digital amplifier. The JENO Engine removes jitter and shapes noise in the signal ahead of the power stage, and LAPC, Load Adaptive Phase Calibration, measures the connected speakers to correct the amplitude and phase behaviour of the output. The Advanced Speed Silent Power Supply uses fast semiconductor parts such as gallium nitride FETs and silicon carbide diodes to feed current to the power stage more quickly and efficiently. Compared with the SU-G700, the M2 adds the MC phono stage and a phono input phase selector for older records cut with inverted polarity, and gain on the phono stage can be set in four steps. The USB input handles PCM from 32 kHz to 384 kHz at 16 to 32 bits and DSD at 2.8, 5.6 and 11.2 MHz through ASIO native and DoP modes. Volume and source knobs carry an aluminium spin texture.
Pairing
Most passive loudspeakers fall inside the supported load range, and LAPC adapts the output to the speaker actually connected. Record players fitted with either MM or MC pickups need no step-up device for the phono input, a computer connects over USB, and the pre out lets owners add an external power amp or a subwoofer with its own amplifier.
Alternatives
The Technics SU-G700, the model the M2 replaced, is the earlier version of the same integrated amplifier without the MC phono stage.
