The RA180 is an integrated amplifier from the Korean company HiFi Rose, built around Class D output stages that use gallium nitride (GaN) FETs and fed by a power supply with silicon carbide (SiC) FETs. It combines line and phono inputs, a small digital input section, tone controls, an active crossover and front-panel VU meters in one chassis finished in high-purity aluminium. The US list price was USD 6,995.
Key specs that matter
HiFi Rose rates the RA180 at 200 W x 2 into 8 ohm across 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 0.1 percent THD. Inside are four amplifier modules, two per channel, each producing 200 W, and in bridge-tied-load mode they deliver 400 W per channel. A 1,000 W switch-mode supply powers the unit. The frequency range reaches from 10 Hz to 100 kHz at 1 W into 8 ohm, damping factor exceeds 150 and output impedance is 53 milliohm. Signal-to-noise ratio is 107 dB in BTL or balanced use, 105 dB unbalanced, 80 dB for the MM phono stage and 60 dB for MC. The chassis is 42.9 cm wide and 34.8 cm deep, and the unit weighs 16.7 kg.
Engineering and use context
Inputs comprise one balanced XLR line input, three unbalanced RCA line inputs, a phono socket that toggles for MM or MC pickups, one coaxial digital input and a USB audio input. Outputs include a subwoofer feed and terminals for two sets of stereo speakers. The four modules can be used either bridged or for bi-amping. The phono stage offers adjustable EQ curves. An active high-pass crossover can be set between 600 Hz and 6 kHz at the -3 dB point, bass and treble controls act at 100 Hz and 10 kHz and move each band by up to 15 dB either way, and an on-off subsonic filter has its -3 dB point at 50 Hz. A bypass mode lets the RA180 work as a power amplifier behind another preamplifier. The VU meters can be dimmed, a trigger input accepts 3.3 to 12 V, and the IR remote uses 38 kHz with a working distance of 10 m. Mains input covers 100 to 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz, so one version serves different regions.
Pairing
The balanced input and the power amp bypass allow the RA180 to take a streamer or a separate control unit that handles level, while a record player needs no outboard phono box. The subwoofer output and the adjustable high-pass filter suit a system in which a powered subwoofer takes the lowest octaves from smaller speakers.
