The MA7200 is a solid-state two-channel integrated amplifier from McIntosh Laboratory that combines a preamplifier, a power stage, two phono stages and the DA2 digital module in one chassis. It accepts 15 sources in total, eight analog and seven digital, and is certified as Roon Tested. McIntosh does not offer it in the US and Canada, where the MAC7200 receiver takes its place.

Rated output is 200 W per channel into 2, 4 or 8 ohms across a 20 Hz to 20 kHz power band, with 0.005% total harmonic distortion and 2 dB of dynamic headroom. Response is flat within 0.5 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and within 3 dB from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. The damping factor is above 40, and the high-level signal-to-noise ratio is 95 dB. Analog connections are one balanced input, five unbalanced inputs, a moving-coil phono input with adjustable loading plus an MM phono connection whose loading is fixed. High-level sensitivity is 0.5 V balanced and 0.25 V unbalanced, and phono sensitivity is 0.25 mV for MC and 2.5 mV for MM. The chassis measures 44.5 x 19.4 x 47.6 cm and weighs 34.1 kg.

Engineering and use context

Autoformers let the amplifier deliver its full rating regardless of the speaker impedance, while Power Guard prevents clipping and the Sentry Monitor circuit protects the output stage. Monogrammed Heatsinks carry heat away and require no warm-up time. The DA2 module uses an 8-channel 32-bit/384 kHz DAC in a Quad Balanced configuration. Its USB input handles PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz, DSD64 through DSD512 and DXD at 352.8 and 384 kHz, while each coaxial and optical input reaches 24-bit/192 kHz. A proprietary MCT input serves McIntosh SACD transports such as the MCT500, and an HDMI ARC input carries audio only. The bass and treble adjustments have a bypass, inputs can be renamed and level matched, and blue watt meters show output power. The steel chassis has a dual-layer build behind a black glass front panel with aluminium end caps. Power draw is 4.4 A at 120 V, and standby consumption stays below 0.25 W.

Pairing

The front 6.35 mm jack is driven by a High Drive headphone stage that includes McIntosh HXD crossfeed processing. Home Theater PassThru lets a surround processor use the power stage for the front channels, and two unbalanced variable outputs can drive another amplifier or a powered sub. Integration with control systems runs through RS232, four data ports, IR sensor inputs, one main power control output and two trigger outputs.
