KIN by Totem makes the KIN AMP as a small two-channel integrated amplifier, and the brand is the lifestyle line of Canadian loudspeaker maker Totem Acoustic. Totem announced it on 12 September 2019 as the company's first integrated amplifier, priced at USD 699. The unit houses an amplifier section working in class D, an MM phono input, Bluetooth streaming and an optical digital input in one small box, and the maker sells it in black and white. Totem also lists the earlier first-generation version of the same model, and the current model is sold as the KIN AMP Bluetooth Stereo Amplifier.
Key specs that matter
Totem's proprietary class D circuit delivers 100 W RMS per channel. The rear RCA input switches between line level and MM phono with RIAA equalisation, a 3.5 mm mini-jack takes a second analogue source, and the Toslink optical input accepts signals up to 24 bit and 192 kHz. Wireless playback runs over Bluetooth with Qualcomm aptX HD at up to 48 kHz. Noise sits more than 86 dB below signal, THD stays below 0.1 percent at 1 kHz and 1 W, and response is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB. The chassis measures 255 x 60 x 235 mm and weighs 2.4 kg.
Engineering and use context
A dedicated subwoofer output on RCA covers 20 to 220 Hz, so a powered subwoofer can join a pair of small speakers. A headphone socket on the unit mutes the speaker terminals automatically when a plug goes in. An AMP IN connection turns the unit into a pure power amplifier, bypassing its preamplifier section, and the mini-jack input can also be used in bypass form. The glass front panel carries a blue capacitive touch display that lights when touched and shows the active source and volume. The amplifier switches itself on and selects the input that receives a signal. Supported file formats are MP2 and MP3, WMA, FLAC, AAC, MP4 and M4A, WAV, AIF and AIFC files. A 17-key remote made of aluminium adjusts volume, input selection, bass and treble.
Pairing
The switchable phono stage lets an MM turntable connect straight to the amplifier, without a separate preamplifier. Totem also suggests connecting games consoles, and the subwoofer output and power reserve suit the compact passive speakers from Totem and KIN.
Alternatives
KIN by Totem offers no other integrated amplifier, since the KIN AMP was introduced as the company's first and only model in this category.
