The DOUBLE SHOT is a New Zealand integrated amplifier made by JAVA Hi-Fi, a company that builds two ranges, Single Shot and Double Shot, each offered as preamplifier, power amplifier and integrated amplifier. This model pairs a fully balanced dual mono amplifier with a USB DAC, an MM phono stage, Bluetooth reception and a headphone socket. Its listed price was USD 13,000.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 400 W into 8 ohm at under 0.05 percent THD, rising to 800 W into 4 ohm. THD+N is below 0.01 percent at 1 W across 20 Hz to 20 kHz and 0.02 percent at 25 W and 1 kHz. The signal to noise ratio exceeds 112 dB, frequency response is 10 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.5 dB, input impedance is 100 kohm and common-mode rejection is 75 dB. Four balanced XLR line inputs are fitted, alongside fixed and variable XLR outputs. The case measures 44 x 41.5 x 13 cm.
Engineering and use context
The power stages use gallium nitride (GaN) FET transistors, while volume and preamplification are handled by light dependent resistors (LDR). The main circuit board is mounted inverted, which JAVA describes as a means of vibration and resonance control for the audio circuit. The DAC section places two Burr-Brown PCM1794A chips in monaural mode, clocked by a Crystek CCHD-575 oscillator with 82 femtoseconds of jitter and followed by a balanced differential OPA1612 output stage. It accepts USB only, handles PCM up to 24-bit and 192 kHz and converts DSD to PCM. JAVA quotes 130 dB A-weighted SNR, 125 dB dynamic range and 0.0003 percent THD+N for the converter, with 5 V RMS output. Vinyl enters through RCA phono inputs, and there is no setting for moving coil cartridges. The outer case is solid wood with real veneers in seven finishes, paired with a 4 mm anodised aluminium front panel in three colours. Two endlessly rotating knobs with LED halos select source and volume, and a brushed black aluminium remote is supplied. Speaker cables attach to ETI Research binding posts, and headphones plug into a 6.3 mm jack.
Pairing
Record decks fitted with moving magnet pickups plug straight in, while an MC cartridge needs a step-up device or an outboard phono stage. Computer audio enters through USB, phones through Bluetooth, and balanced sources through the XLR inputs. Its adjustable XLR pre-out allows bi-amping with a separate power stage or connection to a self-powered bass unit.
Alternatives
JAVA's later Double Shot 200 is a further integrated amplifier, which keeps an MM phono stage and adds Bluetooth aptX.
