The CDV-2 NW is a two-way valve electronic crossover from the Reference Series of Concert Fidelity, the Japanese electronics maker that Masataka Tsuda started in 1987 and still runs as designer and builder. The NW suffix marks the crossover version of the CDV-2 platform, which has no streaming or amplifier section. The company's product list places it in the Reference Series with the CF-080LSX line stages, the DAC-040Mk2 converter and the ZL-series MOSFET monoblocks. Each unit is built in Japan, and no list price is published.
Key specs that matter
Signal enters through one pair of single-ended RCA jacks. Two RCA output pairs follow - a high-frequency output and a low-frequency output - and each has its own level control, so the gain sent to the tweeter amplifier and the woofer amplifier can be matched to driver efficiency. The unit works either as a stereo two-way crossover or as a mono three-way crossover. Filter slopes of 6 dB or 12 dB per octave are offered, and Concert Fidelity describes the filters as fully custom-made, which means the crossover points are set for the loudspeaker in question rather than chosen from a fixed menu. A 30 second mute holds the outputs silent after switch-on. Three 12AU7 (ECC82) double triodes act as filter buffer amplifiers and a single 6CA4 (EZ81) handles rectification. The case measures 450 x 100 x 310 mm and weighs from 10 kg upward.
Engineering and use context
No single driver can cover the whole audio band, so multi-way speakers split the work between woofer, midrange and tweeter, and an electronic crossover performs that division ahead of separate power amplifiers instead of inside the speaker cabinet. Placing the filter at line level removes passive crossover parts between amplifier and driver. The valve sockets are designed for tube swapping, but the company ships its products without valves, so the owner supplies the 12AU7 and 6CA4 set. A transformer for the destination country is fitted, the maker covers operation only at 100 V, 110 to 120 V, 220 to 230 V or 240 V as ordered, and faults occurring outside that country fall outside the warranty.
Pairing
Upstream the CDV-2 NW wants a line stage such as the CF-080LSX4 to set volume. Downstream a bi-amplified stereo pair needs four amplifier channels, whether as two stereo units or four mono chassis, and Concert Fidelity's own ZL-120FX2 takes the RCA feed directly since it has RCA inputs only. The speakers must give direct access to each driver.
Alternatives
The CDV-2 SP shares the same chassis and valve set but acts as a bi-amp splitter, sending a full-range signal to two output pairs with selectable output 1, output 2 or both modes.
