The AXA35 is the larger of the two integrated amplifiers in the AX series from Cambridge Audio, placed above the AXA25. This stereo integrated includes an MM phono preamplifier, bass and treble adjustment and a front headphone socket, all in a full-width case. Its all-metal case takes its inspiration from the Edge Series, the maker's top range, and carries a brushed aluminium faceplate in Lunar Grey. It sold for USD 449 in the US, and the box contains the power cable, a remote control and two AAA batteries.
Key specs that matter
Output is 35 W per channel into 8 ohm. Cambridge Audio gives THD below 0.01% at 1 kHz and below 0.15% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, both at 80% of rated power. Frequency response runs from 5 Hz to 50 kHz at -3 dB, noise sits more than 82 dB below a 1 W reference unweighted, and the damping factor is above 50. Line inputs have an impedance of 47 kohm. The chassis is 83 mm high, 430 mm wide and 335 mm deep and weighs 5.6 kg. Maximum power draw is 260 W, and standby consumption stays under 0.5 W.
Engineering and use context
Toroidal transformers supply the amplifier, a part the maker says is normally found in its higher-tier models and used here to channel extra power more accurately. Bass and treble are shelving controls with a maximum boost or cut of 10 dB at 100 Hz and 10 kHz, set through a menu, and a balance control is also provided. An LED dot matrix display shows the selected source and the volume level. The signal path is purely analogue, with no digital circuitry. An auto power down function drops the unit into standby after 20 minutes without signal, and plugging in headphones mutes the speaker outputs automatically.
Pairing
Four RCA line inputs on the back accept a CD player, a streamer or a tape deck, and a separate RCA phono input is reserved for turntables using moving magnet pickups. A 3.5 mm aux socket on the front accepts a phone, and a USB port on the rear supplies 5 V to power a Bluetooth receiver. A record output feeds a recorder, the 6.35 mm headphone jack works with headphones from 32 to 600 ohm, and the speaker terminals are hi-fi binding posts. The matching AXC35 CD player, listed at GBP 349, comes from the same series and completes a two-box system, and the full-function remote also operates the AXC35 and AXC25 CD players.
