The 40 AMP is an integrated amplifier from Cyrus Audio that brings together a stereo power amplifier, preamplifier, 32-bit DAC and MM phono section in a single 40 series case. It is housed in anodised aluminium and carries a 127 mm high-resolution colour TFT display on the front. According to Cyrus, its central circuit was designed entirely by the company's own R&D team. A five-year warranty applies.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 2 x 100 W into 6 ohm, rising to 2 x 113 W into the same load when the optional 40 PSU is connected. THD+N is below 0.002% at 1 kHz and two-thirds power into 8 ohm, signal-to-noise reaches 105 dBA, and the analogue inputs present 28 kOhm with a sensitivity of 237 mV. Conversion relies on the ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M chipset, reworked by Cyrus, with eight selectable DAC filters. The coaxial and optical inputs accept 16/44.1 to 24/192, while the USB-B input runs from 16/44.1 up to 32/384. The chassis measures 88 x 220 x 385 mm, height first, and weighs 8.5 kg.
Engineering and use context
On the rear there are four analogue line inputs, one MM phono input, a single optical plus two coaxial inputs, an asynchronous USB-B port and an HDMI eARC input, so a television can be routed through the amplifier. The low-noise phono stage inherits many of its design features from the Cyrus Classic PHONO. Outputs comprise a variable preamplifier feed, a fixed line feed and a 3.5 mm headphone socket. The line stage itself is specified at below 0.001% THD and above 113 dBA signal-to-noise at full digital scale. An RJ45 Ethernet socket and a USB-A port serve only to load new firmware. The supplied remote handset has a backlit keypad. Auto-standby is adjustable, with a default of 20 minutes, standby draw is under 0.5 W, and maximum power consumption is 500 W.
Pairing
Vinyl playback needs only a deck with an MM cartridge plugged into the phono socket, without a separate phono preamplifier, while a disc transport, network streamer or computer can feed the digital sockets directly. The preamplifier output leaves room to add a separate power amplifier later, while the fixed output delivers a line signal that does not follow the volume setting. The 40 PSU is the dedicated supply upgrade, joined to the amplifier by a single cable, with all of its output voltages digitally controlled.
Alternatives
The Cyrus 80 AMP is an integrated amplifier with built-in streaming and a Class A/B output stage rated at 150 W per channel.
