The 082 is a Classic Line integrated amplifier made by Burmester in Berlin, introduced around 2008 and priced at about EUR 9,900 in 2013. It is derived from the 032 integrated amplifier, with a slightly smaller power supply, and like other Burmester components each unit is hand-assembled and runs through a week of burn-in before delivery.
Key specs that matter
Output is 100 W per channel into 8 ohms and 150 W into 4 ohms. The power supply uses a 450 VA toroidal transformer and 82,000 µF of capacitance. Inputs are three XLR and two RCA sockets, with the manual listing CD, Tuner, AUX1 and Surround on XLR and AUX2 and Tape on RCA, together with a balanced surround throughput. Outputs are balanced and unbalanced pre-outs, a tape output and a 6.3 mm headphone jack. Frequency response is 3 Hz to 100 kHz, signal to noise ratio 96 dB and damping factor 1,000. The amplifier measures 480 x 179 x 492 mm and weighs 25 kg.
Engineering and use context
The amplifier sections are balanced and DC-coupled, so the signal passes without coupling capacitors, and Burmester's X-Amp modules, its own discrete Class A stages, form the gain circuits. A balanced layout from input to output carries each channel as a pair of mirrored signals, which rejects interference common to both. Tone controls can be bypassed when not needed. The surround throughput lets a multichannel processor use the 082 as the front-channel amplifier, bypassing its volume control. Remote on and off connections link it to other Burmester components, and BurLink provides control over RS-232 or USB. The front panel is milled from solid aluminium. Burmester's range at the time also included the 101 in the Classic Line, and the 082 was the more compact alternative to the 032. The 082 has no module slots, so phono or DAC functions require separate components.
Pairing
The balanced XLR inputs suit Burmester's own CD players and DACs as well as other sources with balanced outputs. Given its output into 4 ohm loads, the 082 drives most loudspeakers in rooms of about 20 m2, and a second power amplifier can be added through the pre-outs. Turntables need an external phono preamplifier, since the 082 has no phono input.
Alternatives
The Burmester 032 is the integrated amplifier from which the 082 was derived, using a larger power supply in the same Classic Line styling.
