Est. year: 1951

Nagra is a Swiss audio brand from the Lake Geneva region, introduced in 1951 when the Polish-born inventor Stefan Kudelski created the portable audio recorder that carried the name. Nagra tape machines became standard tools for location sound, and in 1997 the company extended its engineering into a range of high-end equipment for home listeners. Today it is active in high-end hi-fi, professional recording and devices for security and law enforcement use, with representation in more than 30 countries.

Range & what it's known for

The home audio collection is organised into five lines - Reference at the top, then HD, Series II, Classic and the Compact line. Across them the company offers amplifiers, preamplifiers, DACs, CD players and phono stages, including vacuum tube phono preamplifiers, and the Reference Anniversary Turntable as a complete record playback system. The professional side continues with portable recorders such as the NAGRA Seven two-channel machine. Historic models include the Nagra I to VI recorders, the digital Nagra D and ARES recorders, and the miniature Série Noire machines using 3.81 mm tape, originally ordered for the US Secret Service.

Who owns it and where it's made

For decades Nagra was part of the Kudelski Group. Today the audio products are developed, produced and sold by Audio Technology Switzerland S.A., an independently owned company based in Romanel-sur-Lausanne. Design and production remain in Switzerland, which the brand states through its line of Swiss innovation since 1951.

Who it's for

Nagra is aimed at buyers prepared to spend at the very top of the market on Swiss-built electronics with a professional recording lineage. The Compact and Classic lines are the usual entry points, often as a DAC or preamplifier added to an existing system, while the HD and Reference lines are the destination for owners assembling a complete Nagra chain.
