Clearaudio is a German analogue specialist based in Erlangen, founded in 1978 by engineer Peter Suchy. The company builds turntables, tonearms, cartridges, phono stages and record cleaning machines, and it is widely recognised for its clear and translucent acrylic plinths. Few firms supply a complete record-playing chain from one workshop, and Clearaudio has done so for nearly five decades while remaining in the hands of the founding family.
Range & what it's known for
The turntables are grouped into three tiers. The Essential Line offers plug-and-play models, the Performance Line covers decks such as the Innovation Basic and Innovation, and the Reference Line tops out with the Master Innovation and the Statement. Top models use parallel tracking tonearms instead of conventional pivoted designs, while the Verify tonearm serves the pivoted side. Cartridges run from moving magnet up to moving coil models such as the Goldfinder, and the two-box Statement Phono heads the electronics. Clearaudio actually started with loudspeakers - its first product was the Delta 2, a phase-corrected two-way compact that sold about 3,000 pairs in its first year - alongside cartridges with a strictly symmetrical construction.
Who owns it and where it's made
Clearaudio Electronic GmbH is a private family company. Peter Suchy patented its first moving-coil cartridge in 1978, and in 2005 he stepped back from daily operations, passing management to his children Veronika, Patrick and Robert, with Robert running export and marketing. Design and manufacture take place at a site in Erlangen, set in protected woodland north of the city, that Siemens once used for X-ray film production.
The lineup in this catalog
Turntables, tonearms, cartridges and phono stages are all represented. The least expensive Clearaudio turntables cost about EUR 1,000, while the Statement system goes well past EUR 100,000.
Who it's for
Clearaudio suits vinyl listeners who want every part of the front end, from deck and arm to cartridge, phono stage and cleaning machine, matched by one maker. A first Clearaudio deck usually comes from the Essential Line, a Performance Line Innovation follows, and the Reference Line serves those planning a long-term, top-tier record system.
